Members Layouts - Bardsley (00 Gauge Finescale)

The layout, which is still very much a work in progress, is set in the 1960s to 1970s period and is a bit of a mixture of BR Southern Region and diesel from the same era but not necessarily the same region. Having abandoned an earlier part finished DC GWR layout, I was in a position to start with pretty much a blank canvas. The decision was taken to bring together my two interests of railway modelling and anything IT by opting for full DCC control of the layout - locos, points, lights, the lot run controlled by PC and wireless handhelds (tablet/phone). Hornby Railmaster/eLink was chosen as the DCC package as it allowed all of this together with the use of programming, such as automated station announcements, background sounds and route planning, an area which I am only just beginning to see the power of. Although very much a DCC entry solution, it has served me well so far although the lack of loco detection may be a stumbling block in the future. Sound has also been incorporated into some of the stock where appropriate.

Trackwork is Peco code 75 with large radius points used throughout motorised with Seep PM4 motors (and one Peco) and controlled via DCC Concepts ADSfX decoders, which I cannot recommend highly enough. Peco 3rd rail has been installed on all the layout apart from the TMD. Where appropriate, signals (which are a mixture of kit built Eckon 2 aspect colour lights and some generic ground signals) are linked to the points though not always following absolute prototypical practice. Two separate busses are incorporated, one for DCC (rated at 4A) and the other for 12v lighting (2A). The layout measures 17' by 19" with a station at one end, a diesel traction depot at the other and a couple of hidden sidings behind the depot to act as a storage/fiddle area.  Between the two ends over which the railway is a canal with a road overbridge just before the TMD to conceal the entry to the storage tracks. The storage may be converted to removable cassettes if the layout ever enters the exhibition circuit. This configuration has the advantage of hiding all the "working areas" of the layout from the audience whilst at the same time maximising the scenic area.

At the time of writing, all the track and wiring is complete as are most of the lit buildings and some detail, especially around the station and goods yard. Work is now concentrated on finishing the hard scenery (buildings, bridges etc) with the soft scenery being left to the end.
